Lucinda Ruh

'Spinner Supreme'

1999 World Championships Free Program

"I think if you look down on the ice, you can still see her spinning"

(A quote from a Eurosport commentator long after the Ladies' short programme had finished!)

"Now if you're of a queazy disposition, look away, because this girl will make you dizzy when you watch her spin"

Another quote from a Eurosport commentator just before the start of Lucinda's free programme.

OK. Forget the jumps, and lets talk about those spins!

© Margaret Burwell. All rights reservedSpins have a variety of names (cross toe, jump back sit, Bielmann, etc). How on earth do you begin giving names to Lucinda's spins? How do you name a spin where the skater is balanced on one foot in a stooping position, the other foot resting on her knee, both hands stretched down nearly touching the ice?

Lucinda skated to Gliere's Concerto for Harp. There were 4 spins in the program. The first was a combination spin, the second a layback spin, the third an up-and-down parallel spin, and the last was a BielMann spin, with a blur (and I mean blur) spin to finish.

Even the slow-mo of the final spin was a blur! I was trying to count the number of revolutions, and lost count at 40!

For the record, there were 4 triples, including a triple Toe-double Toe combination, and a double Axel.
